I developed a service model for approximately 60 handicapped students. I served as a liaison between the center serving handicapped children and the regular schools to which those students were assigned. Within district educational and awareness opportunities regarding handicapping conditions were provided to regular staff and to non-handicapped students. Environmental and educational modifications were designed to meet the needs of those diagnosed with various handicapping conditions, in the role of the District Section #504 coordinator.
Project Change (Teacher/Research Assistant with Peabody and Vanderbilt, in collaboration with Nashville Metro School District) |
1976-1977 |
I participated in an experimental project supporting the de-institutionalization of individuals diagnosed with severe or profound handicapping conditions into regular communities and school environments. In addition to the teaching responsibilities, the position required the provision of awareness opportunities for receiving regular education students and staff regarding the intellectual, communicative, and physical disabilities of those previously institutionalized. Families were offered behavioral training and help interfacing with various community agencies.
